Where is Mallorca?

Before diving into all the details to help you plan your Mallorca elopement, let’s start with a quick geography lesson. Mallorca is the largest island in Spain’s Balearic Islands, located in the Mediterranean Sea. It’s part of Spain and sits off the eastern coast of the mainland, near Barcelona and Valencia. Mallorca is a Mediterranean paradise that feels like a world of its own, yet it's incredibly accessible from many European cities and the US if you don’t mind an excitingly long travel day.

How to get to Mallorca

Mallorca is well-connected to the rest of Europe, and there’s one main international airport that serves the island:

Palma de Mallorca Airport (PMI)

This airport is located near the island's capital, Palma, and handles the majority of international flights, making it the best choice for most travelers. It's an easy and convenient airport to fly into, with regular connections from major cities across Europe. Depending on where you plan to elope, Palma is central and makes accessing the island’s incredible locations seamless. I’ll provide specific details on which areas of the island to explore, and the easiest routes to get there!

HOW TO TRAVEL AROUND MALLORCA

When it comes to exploring Mallorca, I highly recommend traveling by car. This way, you’ll have the freedom to discover the island at your own pace without relying on public transportation. With stunning coastal roads, charming villages, and breathtaking views, you’ll want the flexibility to stop wherever your heart desires. You have a couple of options for getting around: you can either rent your own car or hire a private driver.

How to Travel Around Mallorca

If you choose to rent a car and drive around Mallorca, here are some important things to keep in mind:

  • Driver’s License: If you hold a US, Canada, or EU driver’s license, you can drive in Mallorca without needing an International Driver’s Permit. Honestly, when we traveled to Mallorca, we didn’t have a permit and we were fine.

  • Insurance Requirements: Make sure to have third-party insurance to rent a car. Credit card insurance may not be sufficient.

  • Driving Rules: In Mallorca, they drive on the right side of the road, which is similar to most countries.

  • Automatic vs. Manual: While many rental cars are automatic, it’s wise to confirm when booking, especially if you prefer driving an automatic.

  • Rural Areas: Much of Mallorca is rural, so keep an eye out for local wildlife and be prepared for slow-moving farm vehicles, especially in the countryside.

WHY ELOPE IN MALLORCA?

Honestly, once you see the photos in this guide, you probably won’t need much convincing to elope in Mallorca, but let me tell you—this island is truly something special. The landscapes here are unreal. From the rugged mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana to the pristine beaches with crystal-clear waters, the natural beauty of Mallorca is simply breathtaking. And the diversity! You can go from dramatic coastal cliffs to peaceful olive groves, and from charming stone villages to vibrant cities in no time at all.

If you’re into outdoor adventures, Mallorca offers endless opportunities. You can hike through the mountains, explore secluded coves, or visit historical landmarks like the Cathedral of Palma or the hilltop castle of Bellver. And for foodies, the culinary scene here is another reason to elope—imagine enjoying your wedding day with local Mediterranean cuisine, fresh seafood, and wines from local vineyards. Honestly the food in Spain overall has a special place in my heart. #paellakingofNJ (IYKYK)

And trust me, once you visit, you’ll find yourself planning future anniversaries or vow renewals just to experience the magic all over again.

How to PLan a Magical Mallorca Elopement

It’s a much easier process than one might think. And if you’re not the planning type, we have connections to an on-the-ground elopement planner in Spain.

1) Pick a time frame

We’d recommend eloping in Mallorca in either May or September. June-August can be too busy, too hot, and too crowded. When we worked in Mallorca, we went in early September and it was PERFECT. The island usually doesn’t open up well until late April.

2) Book your photographer, officiant, and other travel plans

Once you’ve picked a time frame, start researching your vendors. For most folks, booking their ideal photographer is usually first on the list. Of course, I’d be thrilled to photograph your elopement in Mallorca. but if definitely do your research on a photographer who’s style aligns most with what you’re looking for. Once your main vendors are secured, book your accommodations and flights next.

3) Purchase wedding clothes, rings, etc.

Ah shopping! Honestly one of the funnest parts of getting married. Depending on how much time you have until your adventure departs, you may need to purchase something off the rack or online. I have a handy list of places to shop online if you’re in a hurry. Some fun advice, you can wear whatever you want! If it’s a blue dress, or chic pant suit, you can toss tradition out the window if that’s your style. Pro-tip, if you choose a wedding dress, opt for something more modern and fashion-forward to fit the magic of Mallorca.

4) Finalize and Prep

As it gets closer, you’ll need to start thinking of your day-of plans and full trip itinerary. Luckily for you, if you a hire a photographer who also doubles as a planning guide, you may not have to do any heavy lifting. Some things you’ll need to consider for the day-of is what time is sunset, what time do local restaurants close, what time should hair and makeup be finished, etc.

5) Elope!

Now for the best part. You wake up on your elopement day with the only thing on your to-do list is to have fun and get married. No awkward traditions, no guest list, no nonsense. Just adventure and love.

What is the Best Month to Elope in Mallorca?

Our favorite times to elope in Mallorca are May and September.

Eloping in Mallorca in May:

May in Mallorca is the perfect time to elope if you want a mild Mediterranean climate and lush spring blooms. The island is less crowded, with beautiful wildflowers dotting the countryside and beaches that feel like your own private getaway. The days are warm, with sunsets that cast a golden glow over the sea, ideal for capturing stunning photos.

Bonus: The weather is perfect for hiking or exploring Mallorca’s iconic stone villages like Deià and Valldemossa. You’ll avoid the summer rush and enjoy the island in its natural, peaceful beauty.

Eloping in Mallorca in September:

September is a magical month in Mallorca. The summer crowds start to thin out, the sea is still warm, and the sunsets are absolutely breathtaking. You can enjoy late afternoons sipping wine in vineyard courtyards or walking through olive groves. The island’s vibrant colors make for stunning photo backdrops—from golden beaches to dramatic cliffs along the coast.

Bonus: September in Mallorca also means endless options for a coastal ceremony, as well as stunning hikes through the Serra de Tramuntana mountains. With the island more relaxed, it's a perfect time for a quiet, intimate elopement.

Where to Elope in Malloca

Mallorca’s beauty is diverse, from its turquoise waters to rugged mountains. While there are endless spots to choose from, here are some of our favorite iconic places to elope and photograph in Mallorca.

1. Mediterranean Finca Elopements

For couples looking to combine rustic charm with luxury, Mallorca’s traditional fincas (country estates) offer a beautiful, intimate backdrop for an elopement. Imagine getting married surrounded by vineyards, olive trees, and rolling hills, followed by a candlelit dinner under the stars.

Here is a list of finca’s or agritourismo’s who will accommodate your elopement.

Finca Comassema – Located in the stunning Orient Valley, this venue offers lush Mediterranean gardens, a historic "Safareig," and picturesque views of the Tramuntana Mountains. It's a peaceful, exclusive location for both large and intimate weddings, with indoor and outdoor spaces available for your ceremony and reception Finca Comassema

Es Lligats Agrotourismo – This adults-only property near Sant Llorenç des Cardassar features 13 independent houses surrounded by olive, almond, and orange groves. It offers a tranquil, rural atmosphere, ideal for couples looking for a peaceful elopement or small wedding amidst nature. Es Lligats

Finca Morneta – Just 20 minutes from Palma, this historic estate offers 2,000 square meters of manicured gardens, perfect for intimate celebrations. The property includes charming outdoor and indoor spaces, including a honeymoon suite, and can host up to 200 guests for larger events Wedinspire

2. Clifftop Ceremonies at Cap de Formentor

Cap de Formentor, the northernmost point of Mallorca, offers jaw-dropping views over the sea from its towering cliffs. It’s one of the island’s most iconic spots and makes for an unforgettable elopement setting. The sunset views here are especially magical. I’m not going to lie, I would do LOTS of research before opting for this location. When I was planning an elopement in Mallorca for one of my 2024 couples, I discovered that no private cars are allowed on the road from June-September. Which means only public transportation. If you know Spain, you may know that their amenities are not always reliable or punctual. Just a fair warning here, but with the right planning, the best sunset views in Mallorca could be had on your elopement day!

3. Secluded Beaches and Hidden Coves

Mallorca is home to some of the most beautiful beaches in the Mediterranean. From Cala Figuera’s wild beauty to the crystal-clear waters of Es Trenc, you’ll find the perfect spot for a private beach ceremony.

Here’s a list of hidden beaches and secluded coves in Mallorca that are perfect for an intimate elopement ceremony:

  1. Cala Varques
Located on the east coast, Cala Varques is a peaceful, unspoiled cove accessible via a short hike. It offers crystal-clear waters, rugged cliffs, and a tranquil atmosphere, making it ideal for a romantic ceremony away from the crowds.

  2. Cala Tuent
Tucked away on Mallorca's northwestern coast, Cala Tuent is a secluded pebble beach surrounded by the Tramuntana Mountains. The dramatic backdrop and peaceful setting provide a magical ambiance for elopements.

  3. Cala S'Almunia
This hidden gem near Santanyí is a small, rocky cove that requires a short walk down stone steps. The natural beauty of the turquoise waters and rock formations makes it a unique and intimate spot for a wedding.

  4. Cala Mitjana
On the east coast near Cala d'Or, Cala Mitjana is a less-frequented cove with a sandy beach and lush greenery. Its isolated location ensures privacy for your elopement ceremony.

  5. Cala Deià
A charming and quiet cove on Mallorca's west coast, Cala Deià offers stunning cliffside views and the allure of a tiny beach village. Its serene atmosphere is perfect for a small, heartfelt ceremony.

  6. Es Caló des Moro
Located in the southeast of Mallorca, Es Caló des Moro is famous for its hidden beauty, turquoise waters, and pristine beach. Accessible only via a trail, it's ideal for couples looking for a secluded and unforgettable setting.

This iconic route near Valldemossa is famous for its breathtaking views of both the Tramuntana Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea. The trail, originally created by Archduke Ludwig Salvator, takes you through pine forests and along cliff edges.

  3. Cala Deià to the Village of Deià

  5. Talaia d'Alcúdia
    Distance: 3 miles round trip
This hike takes you to a watchtower at the peak of the Alcúdia Peninsula. Along the way, you’ll get sweeping views of the mountains and the Mediterranean coastline. The hike is relatively easy but offers rewarding vistas.

Another pro-tip: ensure that your photographer has plans to research these hikes online as well as walk through the ceremony hike in person prior to the elopement. You want to be sure that the trail is not heavily trafficked, has epic views with a clearing to hold the ceremony, and is not dangerous.
